Always a human at the helm: Updated around-the-clock by Capital Weather meteorologists.

Happening now: A few scattered showers possible late this evening and overnight, maybe a rumble of thunder. Overnight lows around 60 to 65.

What’s next? Heat and humidity build tomorrow before a very hot Thursday, when potentially strong to severe thunderstorms return. Conditions cool on Friday with a chance of rain before a beautiful weekend.

Forecast in detail

Tonight: Increasing clouds with the chance of a few scattered showers, maybe a thundershower. Lows dip only into the low to mid-60s with winds from the south and southeast at 5 to 10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): A partly to mostly sunny morning after maybe a near-dawn shower, then partly cloudy by afternoon with the chance of an isolated shower or storm. Highs rise into the increasingly sticky mid-80s to near 90 as humidity rises. Dew points move from the upper 50s to low 60s. Winds are from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy and muggy. Lows range from the mid-60s in cooler areas to the mid-70s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

A look ahead

Thursday brings the big heat, with highs surging into the mid- to upper 90s. Humidity is high, with dew points in the upper 60s to low 70s, helping fuel widespread afternoon to evening thunderstorms. Some storms could be strong to severe. Skies are partly sunny, but cloudier at times around developing storms. DC's record high of 97, set in 1944, could be challenged.

Thursday night brings more showers and thunderstorms at times, with muggy lows in the upper 60s to mid-70s. Confidence: Medium

Friday remains unsettled with scattered showers and storms. It's not as warm, with highs in the low 80s. Humidity is still moderate as a cool front lingers nearby. A shower is possible Friday evening before conditions gradually improve overnight, with clearing skies, lower humidity, and lows in the low to mid-60s. Confidence: Low-Medium

The weekend looks like a weather winner. Expect sunny skies both days, seasonable highs in the mid-80s, low humidity, light breezes, and comfortable evenings. Lows Saturday night should be in the 60s. Confidence: Medium

Next week currently looks to feature near normal temperatures in the 80s along with some much-needed rain chances, especially on Monday and Tuesday.
