The situation: Showers and thunderstorms crossed the area from west to east late afternoon into early evening. Rainfall varied from a few hundredths of an inch to as much as half an inch.

5:15 p.m. update: The heaviest showers and storms are located from around La Plata to Upper Marlboro and shifting east. Storms remain below severe limits, with just some heavy rain and rumbles of thunder associated. Rain is ending in DC and is over to the west.
4:15 p.m. update: Showers and storms are crossing the Interstate 95 corridor. The main impacts are brief heavy rains, occasionally gusty wind, and some low rumbles of thunder.
Dulles Airport has picked up more than 0.3 inches of rain so far with gusts up to 30 mph.

3 p.m. update: The band of showers and thunderstorms, containing areas of heavy rain, is now moving east into Montgomery, Fairfax, and Prince William counties, and will continue east across the DMV the next couple of hours. It should already be exiting east of our region by about 6 p.m. For any given location, the rain shouldn't last much longer than about 1 to 1.5 hours as it comes through.
